1. What is custom picture framing?

Custom picture framing involves designing and constructing a picture frame tailored specifically to your artwork or item. This process ensures a perfect fit and allows for personalised choices in materials, colours, and styles to complement your piece and décor.

2. Why choose custom framing over ready-made frames?

Custom framing offers several advantages:

  • Perfect Fit: Ensures the frame fits your artwork precisely.

  • Material Selection: Choose from a wide range of high-quality materials. Many readymade frames are made using compressed cardboard and poor quality materials which can damage artwork and photographs.

  • Preservation: We are able to offer conservation techniques to protect your artwork over time.

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Tailors the frame to enhance the visual impact of your piece.

3. What types of items can be custom framed?

Custom framing is versatile and can accommodate just about anything:

  • Artworks: Paintings, drawings, and prints.

  • Photographs: Personal or professional photos.

  • Memorabilia: Sports jerseys, medals, and collectibles.

  • Documents: Certificates, diplomas, and awards.

  • Textiles: Tapestries, quilts, and fabric art.

  • 3D Objects: Shadow boxes for items like musical instruments or heirlooms.

4. How much does custom framing cost?

The cost varies based on factors such as size, materials, and complexity. For instance, custom framing a sports jersey can range from $615 to $1300, depending on the chosen materials and design intricacies. We recommend consulting with our framing specialists for a detailed quote tailored to your specific needs or you can use our online framing calculator to work out an estimate in the comfort of your own home.

5. How long does the custom framing process take?

Typically, custom framing takes between 2 to 4 weeks. The timeframe depends on the complexity of the project and the availability of selected materials. We strive to complete projects promptly and will provide an estimated completion date upon order confirmation.

6. What is conservation framing, and do I need it?

Conservation framing uses archival-quality materials and techniques to preserve and protect artwork from environmental factors like light, humidity, and pollutants. It's recommended for valuable or sentimental pieces to ensure their longevity.

7. Can I frame items with sentimental value or 3D objects?

Absolutely. Our custom framing services include shadow boxes and specialised mounts to securely display and protect three-dimensional or sentimental items.

8. What is the difference between glass and acrylic glazing?

  • Glass: Offers clarity and scratch resistance but is heavier and can shatter.

  • Acrylic: Lighter and shatter-resistant, making it safer for larger pieces or high-traffic areas.

We offer both glass and acrylic solution to our clients with a range of UV Light and Reflection Control Options. Clear Glass is the most economical option of glazing that we offer.

9. Do you offer installation services?

Yes, we provide delivery and professional installation services to ensure your framed pieces are securely and aesthetically displayed in your space. You can book our picture hanging services on-line, we are happy to hang and install items in your home that haven't been framed by us.

10. How do I get started with custom framing?

Begin by bringing your artwork or item to our studio or booking a mobile consultation. Our framing experts will guide you through the selection process, discussing materials, styles, and preservation options to create the perfect frame for your piece.

11. Why is picture framing so expensive?

Custom picture framing can seem costly because it combines skilled craftsmanship with high-quality, often conservation-grade materials. Each frame is made to order, tailored to fit and protect your specific item. Costs reflect:

  • Custom cutting and assembly

  • Archival matboards and backings

  • Quality mouldings in various finishes

  • Glazing (glass or acrylic) with UV protection

  • Professional finishing and installation
You're investing in both presentation and preservation—ensuring your artwork lasts for years to come.

12. What is the cardboard bit around a picture?

That "cardboard bit" is called a matboard or mount board. It serves both an aesthetic and protective function:

  • Enhances presentation by adding space and contrast around the artwork

  • Prevents direct contact between the artwork and the glass, avoiding moisture damage or sticking
We offer a wide range of colours and textures to suit your piece and the style of your space.

13. Do I need to frame behind glass?

Not always, but in most cases—yes. Glass (or acrylic) helps protect your artwork from:

  • Dust and dirt

  • UV light, which can fade colours

  • Moisture and pollutants
For paper-based works like photographs, prints, or drawings, glazing is essential. However, for canvas or textured acrylic paintings, framing without glass is often preferred for visual depth and authenticity.

14. What colour frame should I use?

Choosing a frame colour depends on a few key factors:

  • Artwork style and palette: Choose a frame that complements, not competes with, the piece

  • Room décor: Consider existing colours and finishes in the space

  • Mood and intention: Light woods and white for a modern feel, darker tones for classic or dramatic pieces. Our team can guide you through options .
